Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence screening at MoMA

July 21, 2017

Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence will be screening at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as part of a special program entitled "Future Imperfect: The Uncanny in Science Fiction", to be held at MoMA, New York from July 17 through August 31, 2017.

The exhibition includes more than 40 science-fiction films from all over the world by directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Jean-Luc Godard, David Cronenberg, Michael Snow, Alexander Sokurov, and Steven Spielberg. According to the MoMA, these filmmakers "have explored ideas of memory and consciousness; thought, sensation, and desire; self and other; nature and nurture; time and space; and love and death. Their films, lying at the nexus of art, philosophy, and science, occupy a twilight zone bounded only by the imagination, where "humanness" remains an enchanting enigma."

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is the only animated feature film from Japan included in the program.

MoMA official program describes the film as follows:
The breadth of its literary and philosophical pretensions -quoting Milton, Confucius, Asimov, La Nouvelle Eve, and the legend of the Golem, just for starters- is matched only by the splendor of its aesthetics [...].

The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 and today is one of the world's largest museums devoted to modern and contemporary art. Central to The Museum of Modern Art's mission is the encouragement of an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art by the diverse local, national, and international audiences that it serves.

An ideal sequel to the groundbreaking 1995 classic, and a visionary apotheosis of sound an visual magniloquence, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence became the first ever (and as of today, the only) Japanese animated feature film to be nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It was awarded Best Asian Film at Sitges in the same year.
