Miss Hokusai won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and the Excellence Prize at the 39th annual Japan Academy Awards.

Other than Hokusai and O-Ei, Miss Hokusaifeatures another artist, called throughout the film by his real name, Zenjiro. He was to become famous as Keisai Eisen, but in the film he is depicted as a young womanizer who is still striving with his immature artistic skills, and is often scolded by his master Hokusai, as well as object of O-Ei's contempt.
