In a fantastic world which reminds the audience of middle-age Europe, various kingdoms are struggling for supremacy, while they barely keep internal stability. It is a strange world where medieval and modern times cross, and fairies coexist with artificial intelligence tanks and old German town streets.
A woman who fights for her destiny and another who bears her fate meet by chance and start a perilous journey together. A new type of road movie with a powerful story of a friendship and bond between two women is the main storyline of this original TV animation series, Sisters of Wellber.
The show is jointly created and developed by Production I.G and Avex Entertainment, Japan's top entertainment brand company.
Sisters of Wellber also marks the new directorial effort of Takayuki Hamana, the acclaimed director of the world-hit The Prince of Tennis. Hamana and his staff actually traveled to Germany in order to find visual inspiration for the atmosphere of the series.
In the decade after the Great War, the Kingdom of Wellber succeeded in maintaining a fragile yet pacific internal stability. However, there was tension with its neighboring Kingdom of Sangatras, on a continuous threat of war between the two countries. King Hydel of Wellber tried to prevent a deterioration of the diplomatic relationship by marrying his daughter, Princess Rita, to Prince Gernia, the royal heir of Sangatras. But the unexpected happens: Rita stabs her husband-to-be of the political marriage, and runs away from the castle. The furious King Rambernoff of Gernia demands the arrest of Rita within fourteen days and declares that unless she is publicly executed, his country is prepared for war against Wellber.
In order to avert the worst, Rita decides to head for Greedom, a neutral country.
Meanwhile, the lady bandit Tina, who had sneaked into Wellber Castle intentioned to steal the royal treasure, unexpectedly witnesses Rita stabbing Gernia. Whether it was coincidence or fate, Tina hears that the murderer of her parents, the "Man of the Killer Wasp." could be found in Greedom, so she decides to head there as Rita's escort.
Two women who belong to two opposite worlds are to begin a journey against their fate.
What lies ahead? War or peace? Revenge or death?
A manga version of Sisters of Wellber also started being serialized in Japan from February 2007 on Monthly Comic Blade (published by Mag Garden). Drawn by manga artist Naruse Takami and entitled Muzzle-Loader ~ Sisters of Wellber, it tells the story of Tina's past, one of the keys to the animated series.
